So, I read somewhere the other day, that real witches don't mix Samhain traditions with new Halloween traditions (which are in fact, very old traditons) ie: candy, dressing up, caramel apples and pumpkins, etc.. But then I've read other places, and in my opinion, real witches can celebrate however they chose, as long as it is important to them.
Its my second Hallowe'en since finding my new path. And although I am more of a simple spiritual witch mixed with some basic kitchen witchy practices, I still feel that the way I am choosing to celebrate Samhain the year, and many years from now, is perfect just for me and my practices.
-I dress as a witch..duh
-I draw a pentacal and triple goddes symbols on my wrists, thinking that someday I will be brave enough to get the tattoo in real life :)
-I light a candle and say a prayer to honor my family that has passed
-I create a special spot to put up pictures of my passed love ones and place those candles around the pictures.
-I want to leave something outside for them, to take as they travel back to their home in the other world (any suggestions on this? This will be a new one for me)
-I carve pumpkins with my sweet husband and am reminded that I am thankful he is in this world with me
- I cook a Halloween Feast
-We make candy Apples
-We play Halloween movies in the background
-We hand out candy to trick-or-treaters (and as they leave, being the educator and lover of children that I am, I pray that they will be blessed, well taken care of, loved and grow into fabulous little people and then adults) I almost want to do a blessing on their candy before I hand it out! .. is that silly??
How do you feel about mixing new halloween traditions with Samhain celebrations? Is this not true to witchy practices in your opinion? Am I a "bad" witch for mixing? Let me know your advice and ideas!
thanks!

Darling, you are SO very much a Real Witch. I do most if not all of those things. Some years I can do more of them than others. You are doing perfectly fine. Keep it up. I dress up for Halloween every year (not always as a witch) and I thrill with delight when the little ones ring my door bell for treats.
Basically, I make a Samhain dinner with a place setting for grandpa (who passed away a couple of years ago). The children and I take turns remembering him and telling stories about him as we eat our meal. There are a lot of stray cats in the neighborhood so I don't put food outside but if I were to do that, it would be a small serving of whatever I've made for dinner. I also have an artifical Jack-o-Lantern to help light the way for the departed spirits. After dinner, it's time to celebrate. My children are older now so they go to Halloween parties. I stay home and reflect. I haven't had a dumb supper yet. Maybe one of these days I'll host one.
Happy Samhain!
Blessed Be
